The area surrounding the Oi River, which flows through central Shizuoka Prefecture, prospered as a major transportation hub during the Edo period (1603-1867). Thanks to the area’s mild climate and clear water, agriculture—tea production in particular—has flourished here since ancient times. Visitors can learn farming techniques by harvesting crops, study tea production by visiting a tea factory, join cooking workshops run by friendly locals, and engage in various activities on the river and in the countryside.
